When you think of beef in an Italian dish, your mind will probably turn to meatballs, lasagna, a homemade ragu or other even an Italian soup.
Today we’re taking a cut of beef that you may not often use and turning it into an easy Italian dinner the whole family can enjoy.
A special thank you to the Ohio Beef Council for sponsoring this post! We are proud to live in Ohio, where there are over 17.000 beef farming families who work with nutritionists, environmentalists and community leaders to ensure that the beef they are producing is safe, wholesome and nutritious.
We greatly depend on our slow cooker on busy weeknights. Getting a dinner prepared in advance and then letting it cook all day allows me to have more time to sit around the table with my family, hearing about their day, rather than running around the kitchen preparing food.
I’m excited to share with you just one more way to use your slow cooker to make a delicious meal!
What is cube steak?
When you see cube steak in the store, they may look like ground beef or hamburger patties. They are in fact, not the same thing!
Cube Steaks are cut from the round (rear end), which means it can be a tougher cut than some other cuts. The steak cut is tenderized and flattened, which is what makes the classic “look” of a cube steak that you remember from childhood.
Is cube steak lean?
Yes! Because it is cut from the round, cube steak is generally a very lean cut of beef. Recent research shows that enjoying lean beef can help maintain normal cholesterol levels, making it a great addition to your healthy lifestyle.
Not only is cube steak lower in fat, but beef in general provides over 10 essential nutrients and about half of the daily recommended protein (about 25 grams) in just 3 ounces.
How to Cook Cube Steak
If you are cooking a cube steak in gravy, you can saute it in a frying pan. You can also pan fry steaks for classic recipes such as country fried steak.
Our favorite method is slow cooking. Cooking beef in the slow cooker until they are fork tender is one of my favorite ways to cook beef. Cube steaks are great for slow cooking. By slow cooking (or braising), you’ll end up with a cube steak that doesn’t need a knife. It will cut easily with just a fork.
